Fulvous Whistling Duck Dendrocygna bicolor (Vieillot, 1816)
Two, not aged, 7th-8th Nov. 1998 (N.R. Milbourne, R.M. Curber et al.).
While we were carrying out a WeBS count I spotted two strange ducks in the flooded trees at Hellfire Corner. I brought them to the attention of the other counters and whilst we thought they were whistling ducks, we couldn’t put a name to them. I made some basic notes and after the count Roy Curber and I consulted my library and were able to identify them as Fulvous Whistling Ducks Dendrocygna bicolor. The following day they were in Holt Bay but not seen subsequently. It is a pan-tropical species that is mainly resident, though making local movements, and has occurred in southern Europe. However, these were undoubtedly escapees.
