Long-eared Owl Asio otus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Captive © Nigel Milbourne 2007

  1. One, summer 1906 (D. Carr).* See note 1 below.
  2. One, calling, 11th Feb. to 17th March 1973 (D.E. Ladhams, R.S. Harkness).

Note 1: Donald Carr wrote “Saw one last Summer at Holtwood” in the 1907 Report of the Wells Natural History and Archaelogical Society (incorporating the first report of the Mendip Nature Research Club). Bernard W. Tucker later commented “reported in past years from… and near Ubley” in Report on Somerset Birds, 1928, but this doesn’t really constitute an acceptable record. It suggests the species bred locally at the time, as it does today.
